In The Mix 002 – Progressive Sessions

In this episode my featured release is Bonzai Progressive’s In The Mix 002 – Progressive Sessions.  This second installment in the series is curated and mixed by the enigmatic Australian DJ/Producer, Audio Noir.

[In The Mix 002] takes us deeper into the progressive abyss with mind bending sounds and smooth melodies on top of infectious grooves that dig deep into your soul. A super tight mix, this one stays the course with some powerful tracks and remixes from the likes of Ruslan Vashkevich, Rise and Fall, Dark Soul Project & Mathov, Nico Parisi, Prelude, Luciano Delgado, Diyo, Tommi Oskari, Manu Riga, Euphoric Traveller, Sylvering, AK/DK and Airwave.

Parra for Cuva: Darwis

Parra for Cuva: Darwis

A darwis is a religious monk dedicating his entire existence to the advancement of faith and meditation. Although he believes in Allah, he can be described predominantly as a mystic. Refraining from any form of material wealth and even societal appreciation, holy enlightenment is his true aim. After finishing up their semester at University, Nicolas and Jonas or Parra for Cuva & Senoy decided to pack all their gear into their camper and go on a road-trip down to the eastern coast of Spain. The car filled with all kinds of gear, from synths to speakers, guitars, and percussions amongst other tools and toys, three creative weeks ensued, creating music with a view out to the sea. While taking everything in and doing daily trips, the two were able to create enough song ideas in three weeks to spent the rest of the year at home in the studio to finish all arrangements and mixes. Inspired by the Spanish way of life in a small and historically rich port town, a stark contrast to life Berlin, and soaking up diverse musical influences, the individual titles are highly personal and reflect on specific emotions or intimate experiences. During the arrangement of the title-song, the percussion track was accidentally dragged to infinity, which resulted in a trance inducing meditative sound that gave them the idea for the title. Watching turkish dervish dancers while listening should therefore enhance the listening experience. ‘Darw?’ by Parra for Cuva & Senoy comes out worldwide on limited cyan-coloured vinyl (including download code) & limited edition CD including a bonus track via flau records in Japan. All Tracks written and produced by Nicolas Demuth and Jonas Lechenmayr. Vocals on Track 9 by Cornelia Dahlgren. Vocal Mixing on Track 9 by Benedict Fischer. Mastering by Sven Friederichs. A&R: Gordon Gieseking, Malte Tarnow. Artwork by Niklas Freund. Layout & Typography by Gordon Gieseking.

057: May ’16 Review and Mike Griego

May ’16 Review and Mike Griego

In this episode I conduct a review of the best tracks released in May of 2016.  I also feature the debut release on microCastle from Mike Griego, an Argentinian producer.  I play the original version of the title track, Idioglossia in Set 3, and the Bog Remix of that track in Set 2.  May ’16 Review and Mike Griego

The title track ‘Idioglossia’ quickly builds a really unique, distinctive groove, with rich percussive elements meeting a catchy little hook and a pulsing bassline, and Mike Griego weaves in even subtler melodies as the track heads into the trippy, abstract breakdown, which sets a powerful, head-spinning second half. The remix of ‘Idioglossia’ comes from Bedrock’s BOg,... His version of the track borrows the warmth from Mike Griego’s original, while transforming the vibe with restrained percussion, sparse but heavy bass tones, and shimmering, layered rippling melodies, and distinctive vocal samples. The middle sequence throws in some dreamier synths, which add additional texture as the remix its lovely finale.

A new microCastle release is always worth hearing, and Mike Griego delivers the goods here as he always does. The highlight for my money, though, is BOg’s delightful remix of ‘Idioglossia’, which will further cement his reputation amongst fans of melodic and intelligent music sitting on the boundary between progressive house and techno.

The rest of the show is dominated evenly by Techno, Deep House, and Chill Out tracks.

055: Homemade Weapons & Red Army, Kenneth James Gibson

In this episode I feature brand new music from Homemade Weapons & Red Army, as well as Kenneth James Gibson.

In August of 2015 Homemade Weapons released the Clarion Call album, featuring 8 incredible tracks of Drum & Bass.  The title track from that release was featured in Episode 25 of the Mongoland Podcast, though the entire album was a worthy effort.  In February of this year this Seattle based producer released a 4 track EP which escaped my notice until now.  That oversight will be rectified shortly.  Meanwhile, on April 29 of this year, Homemade Weapons teamed up with Sacramento based producer, Red Army for the release of the Sleep Terror EP, another 4 track release.    Three of those four tracks are featured in the first set of this week’s episode.

ResidentAdvisor.net said of the Sleep Terror EP collaboration,

Where Homemade Weapons prefers his beats clean and contoured, Red Army likes to embellish them with big pools of reverb and dramatic chords. The result is drum & bass that feels perfectly sculpted and mysterious. They tease out exactly what can make drum & bass’s utilitarian repetition enticing instead of numbing, which is a good way to describe what Samurai Music does as a whole. Records like Sleep Terror likely won’t grab fans of Samurai’s more esoteric leanings, but it’s not meant for them—this is pure drum & bass of the highest order.
